Appliques and plaques are typically used to fill open spaces. Many times the facade of a building or the gable of a roof is treated with some sort of architectural element to compliment the design concept. Appliques are also commonly used above architectural openings, such as doors and windows.
For external applications, appliques and plaques are permanently attached to the structure. You will usually see these elements used to compliment designs that use stucco or cement building materials.
